Letter to the Editor
If event makes one think, it achieved great success
I'm an out-of-state student, and sometimes it's straining being in Pennsylvania because this state is so conservative. I was happy to see that Sex Faire and Cuntfest were able to take place at Penn State, because it shows that some students are willing to think outside the traditionally conservative Pennsylvanian viewpoint. President Spanier apologized to the state for what was shown and done at Sex Faire and that the activities went too far, according to Pennsylvanian values. To some, that is a good thing. If student groups didn't occasionally go too far, no one would every have to think about their positions on issues, or reassess their opinions on what is or is not moral. Every time a student group makes even one person think, it has accomplished the underlying purpose of a university: to teach. Thank you, Dr. Spanier, for defending students' right to free speech, even though you don't approve of what was said. All the recent controversy leads many of us to fear that if Lawless gets his way, only conservative groups will get funding or permission to hold objectionable activities, and it will be a sad day when a public university has to follow such a rule.
