Women gymnasts look to better record against UMass

Collegian Staff Writer

This year's women's gymnastics team theme is 24-7-365.

And, after notching its second highest score of the season last Saturday against Rhode Island that couldn't be closer to the truth.

The Nittany Lions look to improve their 5-3 record and No. 11 national ranking when they take on Massachusetts at 7 tonight in Rec Hall.

Being at home again should be a definite advantage to the Lions, who scored their highest this season against Pittsburgh Feb. 3.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to carry on the momentum from here," sophomore Katie Rowland said. "It boosted our confidence a lot. We want to do what we did at the last home meet. Just go out there and hit 24 for 24."

Massachusetts boasts a 5-5 record this season and is coming off a fall to New Hampshire last weekend.

The Lions already faced New Hampshire in their first home meet this season, winning 194.075-192.150

Massachusetts brings with it, however, coach David Kuzara, the all-time winningest coach in the school's history.

He now has 87 wins in his eight seasons coaching.

Beating last week's performance, therefore, could turn out to be the hardest thing for the Lions tonight.

The Lions' last meet was one that went down in the record books — literally.

"We've really been trying to do what we do in practice," co-captain Maria Taylor said. "And that's what we did last week."

Penn State managed to set new school records on the beam, 49.650, and bars, 49.375, and Rowland set a new individual school record in the all-around scoring a 39.650 and tied the school record on bars with a 9.950.

"I'd like to see them keeping along the same path," Penn State women's gymnastics assistant coach Jessica Bastardi said. "We had another good week of practice and competing at home is a lot easier. Hopefully they will have high energy, and a lot of confidence."

So with their skills in tact the Lions have been focusing on preparing mentally for this meet and the different regional situations they may find themselves in at the close of the season.

Regionals could be held at a host of different locations and the team is preparing itself for wherever may be its final destination for competition. But tonight Penn State knows just where it will be — at home.

"That's our main goal," Rowland said. "To go out there and do what we do in practice. It's going to be a home meet and the crowd will be in our favor."
