Boxing team has final fights before regionals

Collegian Staff Writer

The time of the season has come for the Penn State boxing team to answer the bell.

After a poor performance last weekend at Shippensburg, the team looks to rebound tomorrow night at Navy. This will be the last set of tune-up fights before next month's regional championships.

Leading the team will be 156-pound team president Alex Komlev who will be squaring off against Jerry Heichinback from The Citadel.

Penn State 139-pound stalwart Doug Bayly will match up against Bobby Billaneva from Navy. Bayly has been undefeated in his first two fights of the season and is looking to continue his strong season after a weekend off.

Joining Bayly at 139-pounds will be Nick Baer, who has dropped down a weight class. He will be facing Chris Munar from The Citadel.

"That's what he planned after last season," Komlev said. "I think he'll be very strong at that weight."

Looking to rebound from a split-decision loss last weekend is 159-pound Nathan Labuda who will be fighting Jerry Conklin from The Citadel.

Undefeated rookie Miles Rivas will box Midshipman Kevin O'Donnell at 165 pounds.

Rounding out the fight card is 185-pound Briama Cooper, Penn State's lone winner from last weekend, who will be taking on Navy's Ben Zuber. This is a rematch of last year's National semifinals, which Cooper won despite being knocked down in the first round.

Part of the difficulty the team will face tomorrow is that all of their opponents are from military academies. Boxing is part of the required curriculum at both The Citadel and Navy so both schools have large groups of potential fighters.

Penn State coach Bill Wrable described boxers from each school as being traditionally tough, with Navy winning wining three straight team national titles from 1996-98.

"Going against a Navy guy you always have to be on your toes," Bayly said. "You have to be ready to fight your heart out."

The team feels they need a strong showing after last week's debacle, which few of the team's more experienced fighters fought in.

"We need to take a step back, recollect ourselves, learn from our mistakes and move on from there," Bayly said.
