The final complete team event of the season has arrived.
The Penn State women's indoor track team will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to compete in the Big Ten Indoor Track Championships. Of all the team indoor meets, this is the most important.
"To me this is what collegiate athletics is all about, the conference championships," coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said.
The team has prepared all season long for this meet, in both practice and the meets that they have competed in.
"This year we had top-level competition throughout the year," senior Toyin Augustus said.
"I don't think anyone can say we are not prepared."
The team has been performing well against the high level of competition this season. The Nittany Lions have defeated a number of Big Ten teams along the way and it looks like those teams are starting to take notice.
"We have shown that we are an up and coming team, and we are making a couple people scared," junior Jessica Kern said.
Last season the team finished eighth out of the group of 10 teams.
The champion from last year came from Indiana.
This season the Lions have shown improvement and are looking to take the next step in climbing the Big Ten ladder.
"We will be very excited if we are in the top five," Alford-Sullivan said. "We are putting no limits on ourselves though. Anything is possible."
Alford-Sullivan also said that although the team is not in a position to win the meet, they are setting the stage to be a team that will be able to battle for the top spot soon.
Members of the team are ready to show the Big Ten what they have and are excited to get out and compete.
"I've been anxious," Augustus said.
"A lot of anticipation has been building up."
That anticipation will end tomorrow when the team takes the track. In large meets like these anything can happen, but according to Kern one thing will be certain for the Lions.
"We know what we have to do and we will be ready."
