Do not judge other states until giving them a chance
The recent New Jersey vs. Pennsylvania dispute, started by Katie Graham's column, is absolutely ridiculous. I am a fellow New Jerseyan, but I am not writing to support Graham's argument, which consists of pointless sports facts. The teams that belong to a state are not exactly the best way to go about determining which state is "better" nor does the amount of "good schools" each possesses (for your information, Princeton is the top college in the country). Before everyone who is not from New Jersey decides to give my state the charming nickname, "Armpit of America," learn a little bit more about the state. Why do 136 million people visit New Jersey each year? Maybe for the 127 miles of coastline, 36 state parks, or the perfect location from the beach or New York City. The point is, don't stereotype an entire state based on Newark, a small part of New Jersey. I don't think Pennsylvania is made up of a bunch of mountain hicks, even though my ride up here consists of nothing but mountains and about 50 truck stops with a Big Boy at every one of them. So is it really necessary to place one state above another? When I cross the New Jersey border and enter Pennsylvania, the leaves on the trees don't suddenly become greener, the air doesn't miraculously become cleaner, and I certainly don't become one of the luckier people on earth because I have now entered the state that has the Steelers.
