Apartment buildings suffer wind damage
Several residents of Vairo Boulevard complexes have also reported damage to their cars from flying debris.

Residents of three apartment complexes on Vairo Boulevard said shingles falling from their buildings' roofs caused damage to their cars.

Some of the property managers of the apartment buildings said the complexes recently began construction to repair damage sustained over the past few months and have heard no complaints from residents.

The windstorms of December and early January damaged buildings at College Park-Nittany Crossing, 601 Vairo Blvd., The Pointe, 501 Vairo Blvd., and University Commons, 201 Vairo Blvd. All the complexes suffered minor to significant damage after north winds passed over the grounds. Damage included shingles being ripped from roofs, a carport blowing over and damage to residents' cars from flying debris.

Nittany Crossing sustained some shingle damage. Nittany Crossing was also the site of a carport blowing over in one of the lower parking lots.

"We've had about six students down to talk to us about it," said leasing consultant Scott Daley. "We're in the process of restoration now."

Mike Zweighaft (senior-finance) owns one of the vehicles that sustained damage from flying shingles.

"My car was damaged, my roommate's car was damaged and (the cars of) three other people I came in contact with were damaged," Zweighaft said.

Zweighaft said a Nittany Crossing employee told him the last time this happened, its insurance company did not do anything about it. Zweighaft placed a flier in the apartment complex's mailroom concerning the incident, encouraging other students to get in contact with him. Zweighaft said several students have called him with similar complaints.

Joellyn Kinsey (senior-recreation and park management) owned another vehicle that was damaged. "I didn't realize what happened until the next day when I was driving my car and I looked out my rearview mirror," Kinsey said.

Kinsey said her car sustained substantial damage.

"I got an estimate of $2,000 damage as of now," she said.

Kinsey said she is trying to get Nittany Crossing's insurance to cover the damage.

"I am looking into every aspect of compensation possible," she said.

Officials at University Commons said the complex is still working on repairing its damaged roofs.

Darlene Dorfi, assistant manager, said construction began two weeks ago to repair shingles that blew off of the roofs of a few buildings.

"It will probably be a couple of weeks before they're finished," Dorfi said.

She cited weather conditions such as rain and cold temperatures for delaying the construction.

Faulty construction apparently did not play a role in the damage, she said.

"The way the buildings are situated causes hard winds up on the roofs," Dorfi said.

Amy Licini (junior-marketing), a resident of University Commons, is upset with the conditions created by the shingles.

"I think it's a bit dangerous," Licini said. "I don't like it. I feel like my safety is at risk.

"It's a safety hazard," she said.

Licini also said she is upset that the complex hasn't gotten the entire problem fixed and feels repairs should have been made a long time ago.

None of Licini's property has been damaged, but she said if something happens to her apartment she will be upset.

The Pointe also experienced some minor damage that has already been repaired, said community manger Derek Germann.

"One of our biggest problems was cleaning up from everybody else," said Germann. "A carport from Nittany Crossing blew over here, knocked over two trees and scratched a resident's car," he said.

Germann said The Pointe has already completed repairs on any roofs that were damaged. He said his building's problem wasn't with the shingles but with the wind shear.
