Rap artist grabs mic at Mike's

Collegian Staff Writer

Rap artist and Penn State student Glaccius will perform at 7 tonight at Mike's Movies and Music, 210 E. Calder Way.

Glaccius' set will showcase tracks from his independently released debut album, Amazing Things, and unveil new tracks from his upcoming record. The hour-long set will also spotlight Knotz Crew, Mr. DJ Oh Dowell and Record Heads clothing company.

Glaccius, also known as Osbell Gordon (senior-business management), weathered the trials of producing, manufacturing and distributing an album on a student income. Today, with over 2,500 records sold locally, Glaccius and his production crew of longtime friends are gearing up for the next level.

"I've paid my dues," Glaccius said. "Now it's time to make the money." Having learned the ropes, Glaccius said he now feels comfortable presenting a business proposal to prospective record companies. He's aiming for the big ones — Colombia Records and Universal. "They know that I'm a polished artist and I'm not just looking for a handout."

According to Glaccius, the new album features tighter production qualities and a wider range of stylistic concepts. The 16-track package applies his precise vocabulary and rapid, aggressive rhymes to party joints, romantic avenues and several socially conscious story-line works.

"The Box," for example, depicts the tragic rise and fall of one man on the road to redemption. Hot headed and criminal-minded, the money-hungry character reforms after marriage and his daughter's birth.

"However, as the ice slowly melts from his cold-heartedness," Glaccius said, "his past catches up with a vengeance." The conclusion finds the man desperately seeking revenge for the death of his child, but having wronged so many, he doesn't even know which way to look.

"If the Streets Could Talk," Glaccius said, presents a neighborhood's rapes, murders and night scenes from the pavement's perspective.

Glaccius will debut the record's first single, "Millions," a triumphant testament to trials he's overcome, at Mike's tonight.

In addition to the new record, Glaccius is teaming with Rarlene Hemerly Productions from Allentown to shoot his first video. A team of cameramen, he said, may shoot scenes from tonight's performance.

While Glaccius and Knotz Crew have previously performed in The Collaboration of Mics, a regular hip-hop showcase held in the HUB-Robeson Center, tonight marks the first live hip hop act at Mike's.

"This is just another ground-breaking experience for me and Penn State," Glaccius said. "It's going to be very exciting. The whole set is energized and the crowd will be hype."
