Web contest offers a taste of Hollywood

Collegian Staff Writer

We have all had that experience. We come out of a movie theatre after two hours of seemingly unending agony, look at the slogan displayed brightly on the poster and, in a worse mood than before, shout to the world: "What does the slogan have to do with anything?"

Here is the chance for such artistic members of the public to revolutionize the slogan-writing industry. The creators of Carving Out Our Name, a movie slated to be released later this year, have set up a Web site inviting submissions for a slogan for the movie.

The film revolves around "the effects of fame, love and loss, and how people adapt to those changes," according to a press release.

It has been five years in the making and stars Wes Bentley (American Beauty), Chad Lindberg (October Sky) and Brad Rowe.

The Web site (www.carvingoutourname.com) was set up after the creators received numerous fan letters asking for a forum to share their personal views about the film. The site, once set up, received 65,000 hits in the first week, proving that there are enough movie fans out there to care.

After contestants submit one line that represents the essence of the story based on information gathered from the Web site, the Web masters associated with the making of Carving Out Our Name decide on the winners. Selected lines will appear on the Web site and will be considered as finalists. Among those finalists, a few will be chosen to appear in the film, credited with the name of the person that submits them.

The chosen winners will also be invited to a private Los Angeles premiere screening to see their words on the big screen. Other selected lines will be featured in various marketing materials for the film; these winners will be awarded prizes, such as DVDs and autographed posters.

And for those just looking to brag about seeing a clip from a movie before it is released, the Web site will satisfy that dream in full.
