Arts Festival makes call for student involvement
An exhibition is open to students' visual artworks.

For the Collegian

Students spending this summer in Happy Valley will have the opportunity to participate in the 35th annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.

The call was issued for entries for Images 2001 in its thirteenth annual juried exhibition of fine art. Images 2001 is open to all students residing in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and the District of Columbia.

Those interested in becoming involved are encouraged to contribute any paintings, drawings, hand-pulled prints, photography, mixed media or small sculptures that they desire to have the chance to be displayed.

Festival organizers are also interested in anyone who wants to volunteer for such tasks as lending a hand at information booths or helping to maintain a clean environment at the festival.

Rick Bryant, director of visual arts for the Arts Festival, said, "Everybody should take a look and take a listen."

Bryant feels that the Arts Festival is a wonderful tool for bringing art to Central Pennsylvania and he encourages all to participate in one way or another.

Images 2001 will be shown in the Robeson Gallery at the HUB-Robeson Center. Any work students wish to enter must be no more than three years old, and all entries must be postmarked by March 9, 2001. Entries will be judged, and exhibitors are eligible to win $3,500 in prize money — the largest amount in the exhibition's history.

Frederick R. Brandt will serve as the juror for Images 2001. Brandt currently serves as the curator of the Sydney and Frances Lewis Collection of Postwar Painting and Sculpture, and he is consulting curator of 20th Century Design and Decorative Arts at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, both located in Richmond, Va.

Brandt also holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Penn State, and received an alumni achievement award from Penn State's College of Arts and Architecture in 1989.

Students who care for more information about Images 2001 may contact the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts at 814-237-3682 or by e-mail at images@arts-festival.com, or on the Web (www.arts-festival.com).
