Dancers give Ballroom Club a spicy whirl

COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER

While the cast of Tango Pasión is in State College, members will be making a pit stop with the Penn State Ballroom Dance Club to teach them a few new moves.

At 4 p.m. tomorrow a workshop will be held in the dance studio of the Pavilion Theatre, which is located in the basement of the building.

A few of the dancers will be on hand to give a demonstration and help out with some tips.

Amy Vashaw, education director for the Center for the Performing Arts, explained the reasoning behind their partnership with the Ballroom Dance Club.

"Almost all of the artists that come into University Park through the Center for the Performing Arts do an outreach or educational program," Vashaw said.

Often the groups will either participate in the CPA's Artistic Viewpoints programs that occur an hour before each show, or they will get involved in some type of classroom setting.

The CPA has done several outreach programs with the local elementary and high schools.

Vashaw set up this program with the Ballroom Dance Club in mind.

"I called up the Ballroom Dance Club, and they were ecstatic about connecting with this group (Tango Pasión)," Vashaw said.

Barbara Kennedy, the advisor for the Ballroom Dance Club, is thrilled that the students will have the chance to interact with the cast of Tango Pasion.

"We are delighted to have the cooperation with the Center for the Performing Arts," Kennedy said.

"We have never worked with them before."

Anyone can attend the workshop and participate with the dancers prior to their 8 p.m. show.
