Letter to the Editor
Minority opinions warrant presence in a free society
I found Gary L. Morella's letter to the Collegian Tuesday, in short, disgusting. Does it surprise me that Mr. Morella's signed title is beyond mere "undergraduate" as "research assistant?" Not particularly. This grossly misinformed and sadly limiting thought so bravely and bluntly displayed in Mr. Morella's letter seems to run rampant on this campus in central Pennsylvania. It enslaves thousands of students, undergraduate and graduate alike, faculty, staff, and even administrators. This is unfortunate, especially since it is we who are deemed the "educated elite." However, just as I am grateful to the Willard Preacher each and every glorious day, I am thankful Mr. Morella had the audacity to send his homophobic undertoned letter to the Collegian, and I am overjoyed that the Collegian chose to publish it. These ridiculous preconceived notions of what a "homosexual," "feminist," or "lesbian" is or does needs to be exposed if we shall have any hope of recognizing and consequently growing away from this kind of narrow-minded thought. Additionally, I found it quite funny that the title of the article was "Some abuse their freedom by taking it to the extreme." First of all, how is freedom abused when some individuals have so little freedom to enjoy in the first place? True equality, even in the aged year of 2001, is a figment of one's imagination. I challenge you, Mr. Morella, to ask a member of any minority group on this campus how they enjoy their "freedom" as an American. You may be surprised what they have to say. Meanwhile, I will not resort to a "culture of death," as Morella identified as liberalism. Sorry to disappoint, but it's not that exciting.
