Lions beat Quincy; continue streak
Mistakes by No. 9 Penn State allowed Quincy to stay in the match.

Collegian Staff Writer

The No. 9 Penn State men's volleyball team won its seventh straight match with a win against Quincy last night defeating the Hawks (30-23, 30-28, 27-30, 30-21) in four games.

The Nittany Lions (8-2, 4-0 EIVA) had their 18 game winning streak snapped in game three after falling behind 4-0 to start the game.

"Quincy made us pay for our mistakes in game three," Penn State men's volleyball coach Mark Pavlik said. "This will help us as we go into a stretch where we face eight straight good teams who will make us pay even more if we make those same mistakes."

Penn State middle hitter John Mills spikes the ball against NJIT earlier this season. The Lions beat Quincy, 3-1, last night at Rec Hall.

The Lions trailed in game three by as much as five points. They were able to climb back into it as they cut the lead to two, at 22-20, on an ace by senior Steve Aird. But after two kills by Quincy senior Rob Steinkuehler and a hitting error the Lions found themselves down five. Game three was ended by a Steinkuehler kill to make it 30-27.

"It was one of those things where they adjusted," junior Jose Quinones said. "We really didn't change our system, but it was the slow start that really hurt. We just didn't make plays."

The Lions won game one despite the effort of Quincy's outside hitter Steinkuehler who had eight kills in game one and totaled a match high 27 kills.

"He played real well," Pavlik said. "He got in front of a lot of balls in the third game, but the fourth game we did a much better job on him."

Game two, the Lions found themselves down by one at the technical timeout, but the Lions were able to come back on the strength of seven kills by junior John Mills. Mills finished with a team high 18 kills, and hit .600 for the evening. Penn State took game two 30-28 despite just hitting .184 for the game.

"The passing was perfect," Mills said. "It's real easy to run middle when the passing is good, along with Jose giving me great sets."

The fourth and final game, the Lions held Steinkuehler to just three kills and hit .571 compared to just .063 for the Hawks. Freshman Richard Schneider chipped in with three kills in game four, Schneider played in all four games even though he did not start.

"I come in and do whatever coach asks me to do," Schneider said. "Game one they asked me to serve a couple, game two I came in and blocked. Basically I come in and try and execute well."

The Lions sophomore Carlos Guerra had 16 kills and led the team with 11 digs. Quinones had 58 assists along with six digs and six kills for the Lions. Sophomore Zeljko Koljesar also had double digit kills with 15.

The volleyball team has two EIVA league matches this weekend, it faces Princeton on Saturday and No.14 Concordia on Sunday. Both start times are scheduled for 4 p.m.
