Students must voice views about UPAC's allocations

I would like to take this opportunity to agree with Greg Sturges' column on UPAC in yesterday's Collegian. The recent blundering of student funds deserves attention and should be brought to the forefront in the upcoming USG elections.

One question should immediately come to mind after reading his column: Why are students made to pay a Student Activity Fee when they have no input as to what it is spent on?

Administrators will say that without the activity fee, students would not be able to enjoy things on campus, such as the HUB. I agree, but what I argue is that something should be done so students have more control over what their money funds and how much is allotted.

A UPAC member says, as stated in the column: "(T)here wasn't enough interest in UPAC to fill up the 35 seats" by election. This is utterly ridiculous. On a campus with more than 40,000 students, 35 could not be found who care to run for a position that decides how the university spends students' money?

Although it is not realistic to abolish UPAC or the Student Activity Fee, we as students can make a difference. UPAC held an information session last week in response to constant questions posed by students. We can take this one step further. This spring, we can elect students to USG who will fight to protect our money and to make sure that it is allotted to programs we support. Only through our actions can anything change.
