Letter to the Editor
Recent Penn State events do not joke about safe sex
In response to Gerard Rihl's letter yesterday, I wonder where he gets these ideas about The Vagina Monologues and Sex Faire. Neither of them included "jokes of the vagina" or an "all out Sex-with-everyone Faire" run by feminist extremists. One was a set of monologues about women's experiences and their bodies. The other was a festival promoting awareness of women's sexuality and looking at sex as a positive thing. It did not promote sex with anyone; it promoted safe sex as something that should be enjoyed, not feared. Neither one mocked or degraded sex in any way, shape or form. As for the idea that the presence of these events leads to a more rapid spread of sexually transmitted diseases, I find this very offensive. The Sex Faire was about safe sex, and there was a table by the AIDS Project, promoting just that. As for The Vagina Monologues, I really don't see how that has much of anything to do with sex. The author of this letter has no real basis for reaching his conclusions, only that he has made false assumptions about what these events are without bothering to take the time to find out for himself.
