[Monday,
Feb. 19, 2001 ] Today's University Park
forecast
Clouds will dominate this
weeks weather as a series of weak disturbances
rotates into the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Some sun
will break through the clouds in the wake of an Arctic
cold front that will deliver plenty of cold air to Happy
Valley toward mid-week. Neither significant rain nor
significant snow will fall at least until the end of this
week, continuing the recent dry spell.

Weather
Highlight
While winters in Siberia typically
feature infamously brutal and intense cold, this January
takes it to the record books. In Boucany, which suffered
through the coldest January since 1940, the temperature
averaged -26.7 °F and did not crack -40 °F for 11
consecutive days. Since the Russian economy tanked in
1998, the region has suffered severe fuel and energy
shortages, meaning that tens of thousands of Siberians
must cope without heat or electricity. Thousands have
frozen to death; multitudes more have frostbite.
