Men's tennis team still undefeated after weekend matches

Collegian Staff Writers

The No. 60 Penn State men's tennis team remained undefeated this weekend, but the matches were a tale of two different teams.

Saturday saw the Nittany Lions (4-0) completely dominate their opponent, American, winning all three doubles matches and all but one singles match.

The Lions posted five straight set wins in singles, while losing just one match against American (0-2). The Lions got the doubles point in a quick fashion and carried that level of play into singles.

Junior Jamie Gresh, along with senior Damon Accardi, defeated junior Bence Hamori and freshman Tushar Garg 8-5. Gresh then went on to defeat Hamori in straight sets in singles, quickly putting the Lions up 2-0.

"Winning doubles quickly always helps," Penn State men's tennis coach Jan Bortner said. "It carries over to singles, and then winning your No. 1 singles that fast gives momentum to the whole team."

Junior Steve van der Westhuyzen and senior Damon Accardi were able to rebound from losses against Virginia Tech to win their matches against American in straight sets.

Sophomore Matt Frakes and junior Chris Destefano also posted straight set wins over junior Josh Procacci and freshman Jonah Flieglman, respectively.

"I was worried with American because they played William & Mary tight," Bortner said. "We were able to win a lot more decisively than I thought we would."

The team that showed up yesterday against Toledo was a pale shadow of the team that dominated the day before. The doubles teams that sparked the victory on Saturday failed to carry that performance into yesterday.

"Doubles was ugly, we seem to take a step forward, and two steps back," Bortner said. "Today was two steps back."

The one bright spot in doubles was the newly formed team of Frakes and DeStefano, who won their second straight match at No. 2, 8-4, defeating sophomore Dipesh Rao and freshman Alex Farron-Mahon.

Singles began with Penn State trailing the Rockets 0-1, but Gresh quickly evened the score at 1-1, with a straight set victory over Rao, 6-3, 6-3.

Accardi followed with a victory over Farron-Mahon. The first set of the match went to a tiebreaker with Accardi winning 10-8. He then finished off his opponent 6-2 in the second set.

"I stepped up and hit the ball, I was aggressive," Accardi said. "I started to come to him and it made a big difference."

Accardi's victory was especially important because van der Westhuyzen and Nielsen both dropped their hard fought matches in three sets.

"Accardi stepped up big, he played with a lot of toughness," Bortner said. "He wasn't playing well, but he won the tiebreaker, that was clutch, of all the guys in singles he was the key."

This win extended the Lions non-conference home-winning streak to 53 matches. The loss drops Toledo to 3-4 on the year. Penn State begins its conference schedule Feb. 25 when it travels to Ohio State.
