Letter to the Editor
Bush's tax proposal is fair, enables taxpayers to save
Being a PSU grad from 1975 and admittedly a Republican, I was very disappointed by the editorial on Bush's tax cut. The slant of this article was not good journalism but an obvious attempt to use select figures to influence an audience. Certainly, any couple that earns $1 million dollars will save more in taxes. Why, they probably pay more than $250,000 in taxes whereas the couple making $20,000 per year probably pays less than $300 in taxes. Should the government subsidize low-income earners? Isn't that socialism? Sure, they are paying a high percentage of their taxes as payroll taxes. But these taxes are allocated to Social Security, which has its own problems. Bush wants to privatize a portion of this, which should reduce these taxes in the long run or at least keep them from going up. Next time you want to make an argument, present all the facts correctly, not just those that appear to support your position when, in fact, really distort the picture.
