Letter to the Editor
Attacks on recent events portray a need for them
The title and content of both The Vagina Monologues and Cuntfest are used for educational as well as shock value purposes. When somebody attacks these events as lewd, distasteful, or unnecessary, it reaffirms the notion that they are indeed necessary. The entire point of these events is to break down stereotypes and demystify the public perception of the vagina. It is not something to shun away or continue to push back into the closet. If a productive, meaningful dialogue about consent, rape and sexually transmitted disease is going to occur, one needs to be open to the idea of a frank, honest discussion. The answer to almost any social dilemma these days is discussion, which is precisely what Cuntfest and The Vagina Monologues attempt to achieve.
