One of the men involved with embezzling more than $300,000 from Penn State was arraigned yesterday and charged with criminal conspiracy, theft by deception and receiving stolen property.
Joseph Szalanski, 62, of Vandergrift, Pa., ran Management Decisions Inc., a legitimate company that completed survey consultant work at Penn State McKeesport. According to police documents, John C. Marshall, the man who initiated the embezzlement, overpaid Szalanski and paid him for services never rendered. Marshall and Szalanski split the money they received.
Police said the total amount of money stolen by Szalanski was $85,600, however, a recently recovered check from Hershey Medical Center uncovered a check written to Management Decisions Inc. for $9,600 for work never completed. The most recently discovered check brings the amount Szalanski allegedly embezzled to $95,200.
Szalanski was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
