A 26-year old man was arrested early Wednesday morning after an altercation between a pedestrian and the passenger in a vehicle on College Avenue.
Jeffery Leighty, a Florida resident, is charged with resisting arrest, escape, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, the State College Police Department said.
According to police documents, Leighty walked across West College Avenue, causing a car driving westbound to brake suddenly. Leighty walked over to the car and engaged the man in the passenger seat in a verbal altercation. Leighty then allegedly hit the passenger in the face before police arrived at the scene.
Police said that upon arrival they noticed Leighty appeared intoxicated. Leighty vomited and the police, fearing alcohol poisoning, contacted Alpha Ambulance Inc. to take him to Centre Community Hospital. Leighty said he did not want to go to the hospital and would kill someone before he went to jail, police said.
Leighty was placed under arrest; however, he refused to turn around and ran westbound on West College Avenue. Police apprehended Leighty and administered pepper spray and Leighty stopped struggling with them, police said.
Leighty was arraigned Wednesday and released on $5,000 bail.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Wednesday.
