Drinking just adds to fun; no one is forced to drink
Rick Law's column encouraging students not to drink because they feel they are supposed to was one of the more pointless columns I have read. Nobody drinks because they are supposed to. People drink because they want to. Ultimately, it is a person's own choice to drink. Even I have said no a few times. But if they drink because someone is forcing them or pouring alcohol down their throat, then they obviously need some self-esteem and some new friends. Nevertheless, I think just a few people would agree with me that a five-kegger on a Friday night is a little more fun than going to an apartment with paintings on the wall displaying the host's "self-expressive side" and drinking coffee with a bunch of people I have never met. But if that's your thing, then that's cool with me. In fact, you'll wake up feeling much better than I do the next morning. My point is that you don't need me to tell you how to have fun. You wouldn't listen if I tried. For that same reason, I don't need Rick Law telling me how to make sure my weekend is safe and fun by his standards. I think I do pretty well all by myself. I think all of us do. So, in response to your column, I'm going to the Cafe at noon on Friday. Later, I'm going to do a keg stand in honor of you. Afterwards, I might even pass out on your street. Now that's fun.
