Letter to the Editor
Messages against drinking versions of Spanier's plea
I believe that Rick Law was on the right track when he wrote about the negative effects that the repeated use of alcohol can have on a college student's lifestyle. I commend Rick for "pushing moderation," and I agree with almost every argument he gives. Rick, you said it yourself: "I hope this column leads to a self-reflective evaluation of why you drink." That is a great message, but why on earth you would write something ridiculous like "Now, before you condemn me as Graham Spanier's preachy little sidekick, let me explain what I'm getting at"? What do you think that Graham Spanier's message to students is? You just wrote a half-page article fully preaching President Spanier's message. Apparently, you have seen what is bad about the excessive consumption of alcohol around Penn State, or you wouldn't have written an informative article about moderation and responsibility. If you really feel the way you do about the idiots that go out and drink until they puke, then President Spanier would be pleased. What I don't understand is why you took Graham Spanier's ideas and rewrote them in your article only to discredit him? Maybe Penn State's President isn't as much of a "preacher" as you think. I do find it amusing that student media have taken his good intentions about drinking in moderation and being responsible and turned them into the coin-phrase "President Spanier is trying to make State College and Penn State alcohol-free." That won't happen because the intentions aren't there on either side. Listen to Rick Law and listen to Graham Spanier moderation and responsibility will make the weekends more enjoyable for the majority of students.
