Letter to the Editor
Bloomsburg's tragic death could happen anywhere
I am writing in response to the appalling letter written by Michael Waltman and the insightful column by Justin Goldman. Both dealt with the tragic death of Bloomsburg's Jared Drosnock. Since his untimely death, I have seen this horrific event cause much debate and controversy. For example, Mr. Waltman states bluntly, "Jared Drosnock died because he didn't think hard enough. End of story." Now, how close-minded and judgmental can one person be? I wonder if Mr. Waltman has ever had too much to drink. Maybe he hasn't, but I have. Many of us have we go out and pay with the consequences of possibly vomiting or passing out. We make mistakes. Jared Drosnock made a mistake. But his penalty was much harsher than a slight hangover. He paid with his life. He drank too much. We know that. Why he didn't stop drinking is a question I cannot answer, but why help was not sought is one I can. And this is where I turn to Mr. Goldman's column. Every word written about the fear of fines and jail due to underage drinking hit home because I have seen it happen. I also whole-heartedly agree with Mr. Goldman's plea for a place where people can seek help when situations such as this arise. For although people comment on how responsibly they drink, some still go overboard from time to time and maybe next time calling for help will not be a double-edged sword.
