Women's track team places second

Collegian Staff Writer

The weekend was a success, but there is still work to be done.

The Penn State women's indoor track team placed second in a highly competitive group of 11 teams at the U.S. Coaches Association Collegiate Invitational.

While the team achieved what it set out to do, it still has it sights set on getting better and doing well in the Big Ten Championships.

"This was an unbelievable weekend across the board," coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said to her team after the meet. "We still have to take one more step."

The team that beat the Nittany Lions was Indiana, the defending Big Ten champion. The margin of victory was close, as Penn State finished with 92 points compared to Indiana's score of 102.33.

Penn State senior Toyin Augustus, left, runs hurdles in a meet earlier this season. Augustus set a new-team record during the weekend’s meet.

Three other teams from the conference competed along with Indiana and Penn State. Those teams were Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio State and each finished behind the Nittany Lions.

"I think we opened up a lot of eyes," sprinter Connie Moore said. "We are a whole lot better than people picked us to be."

Moore was just one team member that excelled over the weekend. She broke the Penn State record in the 60-meter dash, placing second with a time of 7.38 seconds. Her first-place time of 23.65 seconds in the 200-meter dash also broke both her own school record and the facility record in the event.

Also setting records were Toyin Augustus and Deshaya Williams. Augustus broke her own Penn State mark in the 60-meter hurdles and improved on her provisional qualifying time in the 60-meter dash.

Williams performed well as she placed first in the shot put with a NCAA provisional qualifier and broke her Penn State record in the 20-pound weight throw.

The team is competing at a high level at the right time, when the Big Ten Championships are right around the corner.

"That's the plan, to go out and train through meets and peak at championships and nationals," Augustus said.

The team did well this weekend, but Alford-Sullivan made it clear to her team that there is some business to take care of in two weeks at the championships.

"This was fun, but we aren't done."
