Men's lacrosse gets past Gettysburg in scrimmage

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State men's lacrosse coach Glenn Thiel had his first chance to observe his squad against another team in their 13-8 scrimmage win over Gettysburg at Holuba Hall Saturday.

Though he was pleased with his team's effort, it was clear to Thiel that the Nittany Lions were not in regular season form.

"We know we've got a lot of work to do," he said. "We seemed a little bit too anxious out there. We were a little bit unorganized, and we really weren't sticking to plays or an offensive plan. Hopefully that will get better. But we ran well and put forth a good effort."

Gettysburg, one of the top programs in Div. III, got on the board first with two goals, but the Lions went on the attack with goals by senior attacker Eric Wood, sophomores Rob Booth (midfielder) and Charlie Perry (attacker) and junior attacker Will Driscoll to go up 4-2.

Senior Randy Kleinman would also score in the first half, but the Bullets got two of their own. They were down just 5-4 at halftime, and quickly tied the game with an early second half goal.

The Lions scoring continued to come in bunches with consecutive goals by Wood, sophomore attacker Luke Ogelsby and another by Driscoll to open the lead up to 8-5. Gettysburg would answer, and come within one, but the Lions poured it on at the end with goals by senior attacker, Tim Emmick, Oglesby, sophomore midfielder Marshall Feldman and Driscoll to close out the victory.

Thiel was not at all surprised to get a tough match from Division III Gettysburg.

"It's been like this the last two years," Thiel said. "They've got some younger kids this year, but they've got some nice athletes, and they've got a tough team."

Thiel was very pleased with the work of his new attack line.

"They did a real nice job for their first time together," he said. "Woody (Eric Wood) did well in his first time on the attack line. I really liked the way the first three guys played. We just have to get things a bit more organized."

Not much of the lineup was solidified by the first scrimmage.

"A lot of spots are still up in the air," Thiel said. "We were happy with how the midfielders did offensively, but we're a lot more interested in what they can do on the defensive side, and we got burned there a couple times today. A lot of those spots are still open. (Freshman Patrick) Schmidt did a nice job on defense, and we're going to look into getting (freshman Rob) Bateman in a lot more."

"We just got to see everyone working together for the same time. It wasn't perfect, but that's why we have these scrimmages.

Penn State's next exhibition will be a four-way scrimmage at Lehigh this Saturday.
