Everyone who has played hockey wants to walk off their home ice for the final time a champion.
This was the case this weekend for Penn State Division II ice hockey seniors Jake Wolfe, Ken Young, and Jason Smith. They contributed six goals in the team's two wins over Indiana University of Pennsylvania and West Virginia on Friday and Saturday night at the Ice Pavilion.
The weekend got off to a fast start with the Ice Lions piling up nine goals in the first period alone. One of the leaders of this scoring binge was Young, who scored his first two goals of the season. The first, which came with 8:22 remaining, was off a behind- the-back shot taken while he was spinning around.
"It was great," Young said. "My role on this team is not a goal scorer, my role is a physical role, but it's nice."
Also making an impact in the 17-0 drubbing which snapped the teams five game losing streak was Wolfe, the team captain and scoring leader.
He scored his first goal of the evening with 7:10 remaining in the first.
Wolfe added his second goal in the second period, a slapshot from just inside the blue line, with 15:46 left. Wolfe also had seven assists.
The night could be summed up with what was heard from the Penn State team as it came off the ice after the first period, "We are gods."
The true test of the weekend was Saturday night's showdown with IUP, which is advancing to the national championship tournament.
The three seniors started on the front line of the hard-hitting game. Penn State's Pat McCullough drew first blood, scoring with 4:05 left in the first period.
In the closing seconds of the period, Smith added his first goal of the season, giving Penn State momentum heading into the locker room.
In the second period, Wolfe scored a power play goal that brought the raucous crowd to their feet with 14:27 remaining. The Ice Lions staved off a late period rally by IUP, due in large part to the poise of goalie Brian Gratz, who made a series of acrobatic saves throughout the night.
Displaying the heart that allowed them to advance to nationals, IUP made a surge in the third period.
Goals by Jason Persing and Ethan Blough pulled IUP to within one with 13:17 left in the game. Both teams battled for the remainder of the game with many near goals for both teams and a few shoving matches breaking out.
One such incident landed Ice Lion Chris Hibbs in the penalty box with nine seconds remaining. Seeing an opportunity with a face-off in Penn State's zone, IUP pulled its goalie to set up a six-on-four situation. Although he lost the face-off, Jordan Katz might have saved the game by blocking a shot as the game ended sealing Penn State's victory.
"Of any team to beat, this is the team," Wolfe said. "This is the best way to end it."
"These guys have been with us for several years," Penn State coach Mo Stroemel said of the seniors.
"I'm going to miss every one of them. They're more than just three players. . .they are all going to be successful."
As the seniors celebrated their triumph after the game, they all expressed how they would miss the team.
"I've never felt so close to guys in my life," said Young. "This guy (Wolfe) is like my brother. . .I'm so proud to wear this jersey right now."
