The Penn State men's tennis team upset their second straight ITA Top 75 opponent, downing No. 52 Virginia Tech 5-2 Saturday at the Penn State Tennis Center.
The Nittany Lions, ranked No. 70 by the ITA, upset then No. 42 Florida State three weeks ago in their last dual match.
Penn State (4-1) took an early 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches for the doubles point. Junior Jamie Gresh and senior Matt Nielsen extended the Nittany Lion lead to 3-2 with three-set victories at the No.1 and No.3 singles positions. Junior Chris DeStefano for the second consecutive dual match clinched the Lions victory with a win at the No. 6 position. Sophomore Matt Frakes recorded the last Penn State victory at the No. 5 position.
The upset was as important in the East Regional rankings than in the national rankings as the Hokies (3-1) were the No. 2 team in the region entering today and the Nittany Lions were ranked No. 5 in the East.
Penn State will return to action next weekend as they host American University on Saturday at noon and Toledo on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will be played at the Penn State Tennis Center.
