Women gymnasts falter; finish third
A solid performance from Katie Rowland couldn't put the Lions over the top.

West Virginia women's gymnastics coach Linda Burdette was right when she said anything could happen during the quadrangular meet held in West Virginia on Saturday.

It would all come down to which team was the most consistent. And she was dead on.

No. 10 Penn State, however, was dead off.

Penn State’s Nikki Bongiovanni performs in the vault earlier this season. The Lions placed third out of four teams this weekend.

The Nittany Lions finished third with a score of 194.925 behind No. 6 Nebraska, 197.05, and No. 17 West Virginia, 196.6. James Madison finished behind Penn State with a 190.1.

Penn State scored a 49.000 on vault, a 48.65 on bars, a 48.2 on beam, and a 49.075 on floor.

"I think today (Saturday) it just seemed like they weren't really confident going into their routines," Penn State women's gymnastics coach Steve Shephard said. "Last week they had a lot of positive momentum. Like we compete at home, we need to compete away with that level of confidence."

Penn State went into the meet coming off its best score of the season last weekend against Pittsburgh. The team scored a 196.875 with its top performance coming from sophomore Katie Rowland, who earned her second straight all-around title scoring a 39.525, her career best.

Rowland performed well again this weekend scoring a 39.475 in the all-around including scores of 9.900 on bars and 9.875 on vault.

"I think we just looked a little nervous," Rowland said. "We need to go into those competitions with a little more confidence. I think we just didn't step up when we needed to."

However, other Penn State gymnasts weren't as consistent as Rowland. Senior Maria Taylor counted her first fall of the season on beam scoring a 9.15, and sophomore Katie McAvoy fell from bars.

"It's kind of frustrating, we did so well last weekend," Taylor said. "It's almost like we don't know why we can't do it all the time."

Nebraska, however, is doing it all the time. The team broke its school record for the second time this season Saturday. The Cornhuskers had broken their previous record against Missouri on Jan. 28, scoring a 197.025. Nebraska also scored a 49.6 on bars this weekend, on its way to another school record.

Penn State heads to Rhode Island next weekend to try and fix the problems it encountered this weekend.

"I think we need to work on increasing our level of confidence at competition," Shephard said. "Physically, they are prepared. We need to work up to our level of capabilities and we didn't do that today. We would've scored really well if we would've done what we do in practice."
