The next four games might not count toward rankings or tournament seedings, but the No. 2 Penn State men's ice hockey team still has a lot left to play for.
And all of the players have their own ideas of what the remaining games mean.
But somewhere on all of their lists is fun.
"I have the same motive this week as I have every week, to have fun and help the team to a national championship," Penn State forward Scott Fyffe said. "That hasn't changed."
The next step on the Icers' road to the ACHA Championship Tournament is this weekend's road trip to take on No. 4 Ohio University in two games both at 7:30 p.m. today and tomorrow.
The final ACHA rankings were released last Friday and seated the Icers in second place in the conference, and when the tournament seedings were released Wednesday, the Icers found themselves atop pool B with games set against No. 7 Arizona and No. 10 Kent State.
Although the team is excited to finish out the regular season and start the tournament playoffs, which start in just three weeks, they realize they cannot lose sight of the task at hand -- Ohio.
The last time the Icers faced the Bobcats, Penn State came away with a win and a tie. And the Bobcats have apparently not forgotten.
"We were reading some articles in their local paper that said last time we played them the game was a lot closer than the score showed and this time they're going to be ready," freshman forward Glenn Zuck said. "It sounds to me like they're a little over confident."
But, despite some cockiness, the Bobcats do have a good deal of talent, especially in net.
The Bobcats' goaltending crew gave the Icers forwards fits during their two games earlier this season, and can take almost full credit with pulling out the tie on the second night.
Penn State said it is expecting a similar performance from Ohio's goalies this time around.
But Penn State and its netminders also have accomplishments to boast.
In the past 11 games, the Icers have accumulated a record of 10-0-1, including four shutouts and seven wins by four goals or more.
In addition to the team's achievements, some of the lines have been having solid individual successes.
Zuck and his linemates, Justin DePretis and Bill Downey, have been one of Penn State's highest scoring lines scoring three of Penn State's eight goals against No. 9 Delaware last weekend.
Despite the success of Zuck's line last weekend, Penn State barely squeaked by the Blue Hens. The week prior, the Icers battled through a tough game with No. 1 Eastern Michigan to pull out a close overtime win.
Penn State coach Joe Battista said that seeing his team pull out those close wins shows that they have some of the qualities of a championship team. And his confidence is wearing onto the players.
"Coach has been saying all season, 'champions find a way,' and it's kind of coming true for us," Zuck said. "When things aren't going right, we really pull together as a team. And if we keep doing that, I think we'll keep winning."
