Throngs of boys, young and old, dreaming of Britney Spears this Valentine's Day may get "Lucky" after all.
With a little help from the State College American Lung Association and the radio station Beaver 103, one winner's valentine wish will come true. The association will be raffling off autographed Britney merchandise in promotion of its "Make Britney Your Valentine" raffle this weekend at the Nittany Mall.
"We had an autographed photograph and scrapbook that was donated to us," said Lauren Steinberg (senior-public relations), manager of special events for the American Lung Association.
Because of Spears' popularity among children, the American Lung Association decided to raffle off the merchandise to raise money for their First Annual Asthma Olympics.
Steinberg decided to look for other ways to get community businesses involved when planning and organizing the event.
"Basically, I just started calling other businesses in the area that appeal to children," Steinberg said.
Beaver 103, a local radio station that plays Spears and many other Top 40 music selections, was a top choice to co-sponsor the event.
"We were approached by the Lung Association to get involved," said Glen Turner, program director of Beaver 103. "They have the cause and they needed the vehicle to get the word out."
After teaming up with Beaver 103, Steinberg kicked off the raffle with a special appearance on the radio station's morning show Feb.2.
"The phone response has been very positive for it," Turner said. "You can't turn around right now without seeing Britney Spears. Britney is one of the young rising stars. She appeals to people of all ages," he said.
The American Lung Association will be stationed at the Nittany Mall this weekend selling the $1 raffle tickets along with broadcasting a special live Beaver 103 show from 1 to 3 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.
Raffle organizers expect a very large turnout.
"They're going to sell a lot of tickets just by being there," Turner said.
"It'll be a big deal. We're going to hype it."
The grand prize gift pack includes a poster and a video along with the autographed photo and book.
However, there are also fifteen runner-up prizes.
These prizes range from gift certificates to learn-to-ski lessons, and are supplied by other local businesses.
"There's a lot of opportunity to win something even if you don't win Britney Spears," Steinberg said.
The money raised from selling raffle tickets will go towards sponsoring the American Lung Association's Annual Asthma Olympics.
The Asthma Olympics is a half-day event that allows child asthma suffers to participate in a series of sporting event and asthma education stations.
Chris Short (freshman-computer science), an avid Britney fan, thinks the raffle will be a success.
"She'll bring in money cause guys see her on T.V. wearing skimpy clothes and think she's hot," said Short.
The winners of the raffle will be announced Feb. 13 on the Beaver 103 morning show.
