CAC radio show gives expert advice

Collegian Staff Writer

Looking for expert computer advice? Look no further than the Center for Academic Computing's radio program, broadcast every other Wednesday morning.

Karen Hackett, CAC Web coordinator, writer and editor, said the program has provided a means for students and faculty to interact with CAC employees since last February.

"We are answering students' questions in a non-condescending way," Hackett said.

"We talk about all types of topics such as e-mail, personal Web space and how to use a search engine. People aren't always aware of the little details that accompany these topics."

The CAC program, which airs from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on WKPS-FM (90.7), is a segment of the Morning Rush Hour radio show.

Kate Grazzini, a junior at State College Area High School, is one of the disk jockeys for the Morning Rush Hour show. She finds the CAC program both fun and informative.

"I actually learned a lot because I don't know very much about computers," Grazzini said.

Although the program is geared toward students, Hackett said the audience is not limited to students. "We present a wide range of topics for faculty and staff as well as students. We are trying to charter to a larger audience than just the students."

A new feature of the show incorporates Internet technology. Instead of phoning in, listeners can now log on to AOL Instant Messenger to send their questions to the screen name "psurushhour."

"Last week, for the first time, we received a lot of questions from listeners via Instant Messenger. It's a feature maybe we can develop a little more, and answer questions through," Hackett said.
