Letter to the Editor
Women acting like men perpetuates stereotypes
After having read Cassie Hepler's rather bold and provocative column in Monday's edition of the Collegian, which essentially focused on the sexual inequalities and double standards between men and women, I was left feeling both inspired and dismayed. I was inspired because it is nice to see intelligent and socially concerned women (and men, for that matter) who perceive the existing disparities between the sexes, and consequently strive to shake up the status quo. However, I was also somewhat dismayed because, although I can certainly appreciate Ms. Hepler's suggestions for empowering women and their sexuality, I believe her concept of a "female sexual revolution" is rather shortsighted and ill conceived. Ms. Hepler invokes the popular HBO series Sex in the City in order to demonstrate that stereotypically male patterns of sexual behavior, such as indiscriminate selection of sexual partners and emotionally detached "one-night stands," can be just as easily adopted by women. She feels that, because of the double standard surrounding the sexual behavior between the sexes, women ought to rebel against the sexual status quo and begin to "have sex like a man." Although I do agree with Ms. Hepler's argument for consistent standards and equality between the sexes, her suggestion that women should assimilate themselves to the same sick and objectifying patterns of sexuality that characterize the less enlightened (male) souls among us not only fails to bring empowerment to women; it perpetuates the very destructive stereotypes that she wishes to supplant.
