Lawless' attempt to censor appalling and irrational
Programs such as Cuntfest and the Sex Faire are not only good, but are necessary for a university to survive. One of the most vital aspects of a university is the free exchange of ideas. But, alas, Lawless wishes not only to destroy this, but also to restrict every Penn State student's right of free speech. Moreover, if Lawless has his way, our state-supported university might have to trade in freedom of speech for money -- an obvious sign of corruption. Lawless' position is appallingly unfortunate. If the issue of sex cannot even be addressed at a university, then where in our society can it be? Lawless is clearly exploiting his influential position to pursue his own conservative ideals -- ideals that counter the very essence of a university. Further, as yesterday's editorial "Lawless lacks legitimacy in condemning Sex Faire" indicates, UPAC is supported by the Student Activity Fee, not taxpayers' dollars. No public funds were used with Cuntfest, and Sex Faire wasn't even sponsored by UPAC, but by Womyn's Concerns own funds. In short, Lawless should play the game; he should not change the rules. Instead of punishing ex post facto people with whose opinions he disagrees, he should have exercised his rights and organized a counter-Sex Faire demonstration. Matthew W. Boyer
