Womyn's Concerns' events lacking intellectual value

It's a shame that Rep. Lawless is being ridiculed again by the "Conscience of PSU" (a.k.a. The Collegian) for being somewhat disturbed by classy programs like Sex Faire and Cuntfest. Monday's editorial reads "...the outcry did not come from these parents, Mr. Lawless. The outcry came from your own indignation and inability to handle a liberated and frank discussion of sex."

Perhaps the Collegian opinion board needs to tune into life outside the University Park bubble and realize that parents and taxpayers who have heard about gems like Cuntfest are absolutely outraged and want to know who is responsible. While Women's (who's afraid of that 'e'?) Concerns has the right to host programs like C-fest, they don't have the right to have these intellectually devoid sideshows funded by the university.

Sex Faire was not funded by the university, and in my view, should not have been questioned by Lawless as a funding matter. However, Lawless' problems with previous events is definitely warranted.

UPAC has a limited amount of funds, funds which should be used to broaden the intellectual horizons of University Park students. Sorry, but C-fest doesn't make that intellectual cut. And if it does, then I can't wait to see the types of programs the university is opening itself up to. Personally, I'm hoping we can have a "F--- the Police Fest," complete with Ice-T and NWA. I'm sure we all can benefit from this event, just as the university has benefited as a result of C-fest. On a more realistic note, I'd be happy to have UPAC adopt a more stringent review process for funding allocation, and, if necessary, let the people who are footing the bill for these programs (i.e. parents and taxpayers) make the call on the educational and intellectual value a program offers. I believe Rep. Lawless is currently trying to do just that — represent the people who are paying for these events. I know that's terrible and borderline fascist, but Lawless is just doing his job. If Penn State loses funding for funding these embarrassments, so be it. Keep up the good work, Rep. Lawless.
