Women's track has no trouble performing away from home

Collegian Staff Writer

A trip away from home could not stop the Penn State women's indoor track team from having another dominating performance.

The Nittany Lions placed first in a tri-meet against the Tigers and Pennsylvania Saturday at Princeton. Penn State finished 44 points ahead of the second place Quakers and 54 points ahead of Princeton.

"I thought this is what we would do going into it," Penn State coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "I felt that we were a very strong team."

The Lions littered the result sheet with first-place finishes. Out of the 15 events held, the team placed first nine times.

While all first-place finishes are notable, some stood out among the crowd.

Biz Curran took first in the pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 7 inches. That height was good enough to give her the Penn State school record.

Also finishing strong was junior thrower Deshaya Williams. Williams' throw of 55 feet, 5 inches in the shot put, giving her a NCAA provisional qualifier.

"It makes me really excited that it came against this competition and that I stepped it up," Williams said.

Williams joined three other Nittany Lions who have recorded provisional qualifiers. The others are Connie Moore, Toyin Augustus and Jen Aylward.

"I think it shows the great quality in our program," Alford-Sullivan said. "The women have really stepped up."

One of the members who has continued to perform well all season long is the senior Augustus. Augustus took home two more victories in Saturday's meet, one in the 55-meter hurdles and another in the 55-meter dash.

"My confidence is pretty high," she said. "I like to go into each competition with confidence. I ran good, solid races, nothing spectacular, but I am very happy with the meet."

Augustus said that this meet was a warm up for next weekend's home meet, which will feature some Big Ten competition.

"This meet coming up will really give us a sense of where we are because of the great competition," Augustus said.

The team is planning to recuperate during this week's practice as it prepares for the big home meet.
