Officials investigate report of coach furnishing alcohol

The State College Police Department said Friday that it is still "actively investigating" a report that a high school coach supplied alcohol to his players when they were visiting State College last weekend.

According to an article in the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal, the Donegal High School girls' basketball coach resigned last week and eight members of the team, including five starters, were suspended after parents reported to school officials the coach had bought the girls beer during their Penn State visit last weekend. Donegal High School is located in Mount Joy, Pa.

First-year coach Jon Flahart, of York County, Pa., resigned last Monday. Donegal High School Athletic Director Ron Kennedy referred all calls concerning the incident to Superintendent Linda Abele. Abele did not return a phone message last week.

According to the Intelligencer Journal article, anonymous sources said Flahart purchased three cases of beer at a distributorship and brought them back to the team's hotel room. State College Police said the incident it is investigating occurred at the Hampton Inn, 1101 E. College Ave. Police would not release any more details.

When the team returned home, seven parents met with the high school principal to discuss the incident. After being contacted by the high school principle, Flahart resigned, the article said.
