The Penn State women's track team will try to hone its skills this weekend.
The Nittany Lions will travel to Princeton, N.J., Saturday to take on the Tigers and Pennsylvania in a tri-meet. The meet is on a much smaller scale than last weekend's National Open that saw 591 women compete.
While the National Open was an individual competition, this meet is team scored. The team says it wants to go into Princeton relaxed and try to polish its game as they continue to prepare for the Big Ten Championships.
"We're going into this meet to fine tune and refine," captain Deshaya Williams said. "We're trying to keep it low key."
Both Princeton and Penn were part of the impressive group of women assembled last weekend. Coach Beth Alford-Sullivan thinks that the teams will provide good competition and will help the Nittany Lions continue to improve.
"We're looking for good competition, to sharpen our skills and a good team atmosphere as well," Alford-Sullivan said.
This weekend brings the team away from the confines of its beautiful Multi-Sport Complex. However, the difference in facilities and the distance from home does not daunt the women.
"It doesn't really change anything," senior Toyin Augustus said. "Were planning on going in pretty confident."
The team has reason to be confident. The early season has brought them first and second-place finishes in its team scored meets, and some good performances last weekend. The Nittany Lions plan on keeping their streak of excellence alive.
"I think we're in a good situation to look for a win," Alford-Sullivan said. "This is the first year of what we hope to be an annual event. Princeton and UPenn are both good teams."
Good teams that the Nittany Lions hope will get them ready for their stretch drive at the end of the indoor season.
