Women swimmers could set record

Collegian Staff Writer

History could be made tomorrow.

However, the women's swimming and diving team couldn't care less.

Instead of focusing on the opportunity to record the first undefeated dual meet season in the program's existence, the team will be concerned with honoring some of those athletes that made it possible.

The Nittany Lions (7-0) will celebrate Senior Day when they host Iowa (5-6) at noon tomorrow in McCoy Natatorium. The contest is the last home meet, and the last dual meet, of the season.

"In our sport, everything focuses on the post season," said head coach Bill Dorenkott. "We've gone from 11th to 8th to 5th to 4th in the conference. The faces didn't change a lot, but the attitudes did. That's a credit to those young ladies who have done what it takes to move up."

Dorenkott is referring to the five senior swimmers and two senior divers who have helped build the Penn State program into a conference contender over the past four years. These seniors include a Big Ten champion, four Olympic Trials competitors, and three Academic All-Americans, and Dorenkott believes they have laid the groundwork for future success.

"I make a commitment to the seniors," Dorenkott said. "When we eventually win a Big Ten championship, we'll invite them back and let them pick where we hang the banner. They're the foundation."

While Dorenkott is proud of what his seniors have accomplished, the seniors themselves also feel they can look back with satisfaction on their role in the program.

"We've come very far, as far as being ranked, but not just athletically" senior tri-captain Brooke Gilliland said. "As a team, we've come so far. I've never been on a team that I've felt so close with. It's incredible."

And, although the seniors are preparing to close out their collegiate swimming careers, Gilliland said she's not sure she will ever really walk away from the program.

"I won't be competing anymore, but I don't think you can leave this type of program and just leave it behind," she said. "I think it's something I'm always going to follow and be a part of."

Before the seniors get ready to leave, however, they must focus on the competitions that still lie ahead. Dorenkott and his team have been setting their sights on successful finishes at the Big Ten and NCAA championships since the beginning of the season, and tomorrow's meet will provide one last chance for preparation.

"Our approach is to use it as an opportunity to sharpen skills and tune up our racing," he said. "It's our last opportunity to evaluate."

Likewise, Iowa head coach Garland O'Keeffe sees the meet more as practice than competition.

"Our goal is to be 100 percent for Big Tens," she said of the conference championships, which are less than two weeks away. "My expectations for this meet are pretty loose. I think it will be a fun meet."
