Letter to the Editor
Religious organizations should get funding, too
This letter is in response to the letter written by Matthew Lukens on Wednesday. In part, I agree with Matt. The Constitution does say that "Congress shall pass no law regarding an establishment of religion" in the First Amendment. That's about as far as my agreement with Matt goes. The same amendment also states that "Congress shall not prohibit the free exercise thereof." Therefore, why is it that we would discriminate against funding religious organizations that wish to provide the same social services other organizations provide that use federal funding? Isn't that making a restriction on the free exercise of religious groups? It's not like the money is going to pay a local pastor's salary or pay for a new set of stained glass windows in some Catholic church. It's being used just like any other organization that provides social services, so relax!
