Community will not tolerate incivility

We in the university community continue to be deeply disturbed over the assault of two Penn State students — one white and one black — that occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, and are asking for help from anyone who may have witnessed the assault or have any information about it.

Apparently, a group of people were gathered around Acme Pizza on the 200 block of East Beaver Avenue when, in an unprovoked attack, one or more men attacked both victims from behind. The assailants were allegedly part of a larger group of five or six college-aged males, and the group of suspects ran south on Locust Lane.

The victims were taken to Centre Community Hospital for treatment. Student Affairs staff members continue to counsel the two victims and their families.

Even though this crime did not occur on campus, we take this attack on our students very seriously and are determined to help bring this case to justice.

We must not allow the incivility and even criminal actions of a few to speak for Penn State or our community. Violence has no place here. Penn State is a special place, and we all need to do our part to keep it a civil environment for all our students.

We believe there are witnesses to this attack and we ask you to come forward. Penn State Police Services and State College Police Department are cooperating on the investigation, but they need more information. If you or your roommates or classmates saw the assault, or if you have any information that could help our investigation, please call Det. Ralston or the State College police at 234-7150. You may also call CRIMESTOPPERS at (877) 992-7463. There is a reward for up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
