African-American activist to speak this evening

At 6 p.m. today in 113 Carnegie, James Turner will address students as part of Black History Month.

Turner's presentation, "African American History in the Context of the New Millennium: Challenges for African Americans," will feature a performance by the United Soul Ensemble and an ethnic food buffet.

Turner established Cornell University's Africana Studies and Research Center in 1969, and he is currently a professor of African and African-American politics and social policy.

Turner was a founding member of TransAfrica, an African-American lobbying organization, and helped to organize the 1970s Southern Africa Liberation Support Committee, an anti-apartheid movement.

He served as a chair of the North American delegation to the Sixth Pan African Congress, and he co-chaired the International Congress of Africanists in Ethiopia. He also served as President of the African Heritage Studies Association.

Turner was the recipient of the Association of Black Sociologists' Award of Distinction.
