What can you do for $7 dollars these days? Not too much. Tonight, however, students can attend the opera Carmen at Eisenhower Auditorium for this bargain price.
Through funding by the University Park Allocation Committee, the Center for the Performing Arts can provide students with the chance to see shows at reduced prices.
Peter Wray, CPA press and public relations manager, hopes the low-ticket prices will bring attract more students to the shows.
"We are continually trying to reach a broader student audience, and we hope that lower student ticket prices will help," Wray said.
Last year UPAC provided the CPA with a $50,000 allocation to help lower the costs of ticket prices. This year UPAC provided CPA with $100,000 to lower prices and market the prices to students.
UPAC is also helping the CPA by giving them suggestions on how to let the student body know about the low prices. All of the student tickets for this year's season have a reduced price, but others like Carmen are receiving a greater reduction. Next week's God's Trombones will be available to students for $5.
Eduardo Elizondo, overall chairperson for UPAC, said UPAC provided the funds to allow more students to attend the shows.
"We make an allocation for the reducing of prices in order to give more students the opportunity to see those types of programs," he said.
Penn State students will be able to purchase the $7 tickets by obtaining a coupon at the box office in Eisenhower Auditorium. Students can pay $13 for a better seat.
The coupons have been a huge success so far, according to Wray.
"They have worked tremendously. Students are bringing in coupons left and right."
