Lady Icers win one, lose one against rival Pittsburgh in weekend set

Collegian Staff Writer

The Lady Icers defeated the University of Pittsburgh 6-1, on Friday, only to be handed a 2-1 loss on Saturday by the same team they had beaten the night before.

The Ice Panthers came out aggressively and ready to play. The Lady Icers came out just as aggressive, like they had promised they would.

However, no goals were scored until late in the first period. With 48 seconds left to play, Andrea Lavelle split the defense and set captain Ellen Zajko up with the goal.

Lauren Shaw assisted Zajko on a goal in the second. After that, Lavelle and Zajko would team up for four more goals together.

"We practice with each other so much that we kind of know where we are and where we're going," Zajko said. "I think the more we play with each other, the more it clicks with us."

The Ice Panthers would go on to lose the game, but not without making their presence known. Ice Panther Amy Miller and Lady Icer Jen McDevitt agitated each other throughout the game, leading to two penalties.

"She threw a couple of cheap shots," McDevitt said, "And I mean the ref just saw the shots she threw. I agitated it before, but we're told to keep our tempers down."

McDevitt continued to say that she would try to stir up some trouble in Saturday's game as well.

"I'm looking out for her (Miller) because I'm sure she's not gonna be happy."

Coach Billie Willits didn't think the Icers took any bad penalties and was very happy with her teams' play.

"Oh, I was very pleased," Willits said. "I think it was very strong hockey the entire game."

Willits said she wasn't planning on changing the strategy for Saturday's game. Unfortunately, that same strategy didn't find the Lady Icers as successful.

Penn State scored first with 9:23 left in the first. A little over a minute later, Pittsburgh struck back to tie the score. Pitt would score again in the second. That goal would be the last of the contest.

With 2:15 left to play in the third, Penn State called time out.

"I was confident that we could go out there and score a goal," Lavelle said. "We've done it so many times."

But the buzzer sounded and no goal was scored.

The Lady Icers, a team not accustomed to losing, had indeed lost.

"I don't think we came out as hard as we could have," Lavelle said. "We were a little cocky from last night. We gotta take our losses once in awhile and it's not the end of the world."

Pittsburgh's head coach Len Blatnica said that confidence was the reason for his teams' victory.

"We just had to get our confidence up," Blatnica said. "I think today we came in with just a little bit more confidence. We just came in and said we had to play a good game."
