Women gymnasts work on beam mistakes

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State women's gymnastics team counted four falls on beam last weekend against New Hampshire.

That's not good when there's only six people competing and the team has to count five of those routines toward a final score.

So the Nittany Lions hit the gym this week looking to fix those problems in time for their meet against Ohio State at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

At practice, the team worked on hitting its routines and mounts on beam six for six. That meant that the six people in the rotation had to hit their mounts one after the other.

After that, they did the same thing, but this time hitting the entire routine.

"We're getting there, you know," Penn State gymnastics coach Steve Shephard said. "We just need to improve our numbers and their consistency."

But to beat Ohio State the team will have to do more than just perform well on beam. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 7 in the nation, while Penn State is ranked No. 16.

And so the Lions have also worked on their trouble spots on the other events, such as landings on both vault and floor.

According to Penn State women's gymnastics assistant coach Jessica Bastardi the team is also concentrating on cleaning up different aspects of its execution such as bent knees and pointed toes.

"We just want to perform up to the best of our ability," Shephard said.

"If both teams perform to the best of their ability, it will be a close meet. But if we eliminate our mistakes we should be able to beat them."

Penn State beat the Buckeyes last season in Happy Valley with a score of 194.800 — 192.425 and lead the overall series between the two, 20-14.

In last year's meet, Penn State's Katie Rowland and Maria Taylor both scored 9.8 or better on beam and senior Gemma Cuff helped lead the team to an overall score of 49.025 on vault.

Despite not competing in the all-around last week due to a heel bruise, Gemma Cuff will be back in action this weekend doing what she does best — scoring big.

"It's still a little sore," Shephard said. "She's been staying off it as much as she can. It's nothing really that will keep her from being able to compete."

The Nittany Lions will be at full force this weekend against Ohio State, hoping to secure their third dual-meet win of the season.

"We're not taking this lightly at all," Cuff said.

"It will be tough meet. We can't afford to lose on the road, and a win will help us gain confidence for the rest of the season."
