NRT to give 'frightening' psychological performance

Alan Strang gouged the eyes of six horses with a metal spike. This horrific act is the preface to Equus, a play by Peter Shaffer.

No Refund Theatre will be performing Equus at 8 tonight and tomorrow night in 111 Forum.

Alan is obviously troubled and his case falls into the lap of psychiatrist Martin Dysart, who is now responsible for discovering the reasoning behind such a heinous act. The play unravels in a series of interviews held by Dr. Dysart with Alan and the people with whom he regularly associates.

The play brings up many important issues in the attempt to explain Alan's actions, such as the role of religion and the nature versus nurture argument.

"This will probably be the most frightening thing you've seen on stage in a long time," director Nate Kushner (junior-English) said.

Most of Kushner's shows have been comedies, but after reading it, he said he felt he had to do this play. Equus won the Tony Award for best play in 1975.
