Palmer Museum of Art offers month of films that celebrate Black History

Collegian Staff Writer

Come as you are.

That is what the Palmer Museum of Art asks of those who attend the film series and coffee hour they will present Thursday nights during the month of February.

The series is titled "Come as You Are" because it is to be informal and inviting, said Robin Seymour, coordinator of membership and public relations for the museum.

The films, which were chosen by a panel of consultants from the museum and various colleges, coincide with Black History Month.

February schedule

Feb. 8: Boesman and Lena stars Danny Glover and Angela Bassett as a couple scrounging out their existence while memories of their past haunt them.
Feb. 15: Conjure Women is a performance-based documentary exploring the artistry and philosophy of four African-American female artists.
Feb. 22: In Body and Soul, Paul Robeson assumes a dual role in this landmark silent drama chronicling the extreme malevolence of a con man who poses as a parish priest and takes advantage of his adoring flock.

The series begins on Thursday with two short films — Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads and Black, Bold and Beautiful: Black Women's Hair.

Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop is Spike Lee's graduate thesis project for NYU, supervised by Martin Scorsese.

Although some past exhibits have included films, this is the first film series presented by the Palmer Museum.

"We tried to think of a program that would be of interest to the entire university community as well as State College area," Seymour said.

Following the films, there will be a coffee hour for those who would like to stay and discuss the films.

The film series will continue throughout the month of February and there will be a second series in April.

Films that are scheduled in April include Basquiat, Radiohead: Meeting People is Easy and American Movie.

The museum will open its galleries at 7 p.m. and the films, which are free, will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium of the Palmer Museum of Art.
