Well worth the price
Athletes put themselves on the block for charity

Collegian Staff Writer

They searched for money all day long just to go bid on the Crispin brothers. And they got what they came for last night at the Athlete Auction held in Heritage Hall in the HUB. Genny Schnitzer (freshman-DUS) and Danielle Shetler (freshman-DUS) walked around Tener Hall all day today knocking on doors and asking for random people to donate to their fund.

Who knew that by walking around a dorm someone could raise $110?

"They like basketball, but they didn't have a lot of money," said Dan Share (freshman-professional golf management), a friend who helped Schnitzer and Shetler raise the money.

And so when it was all said and done, the two got their dinner at The Tavern with the Crispin brothers for $200.

"As a Christian, I try to do as many things to help with peoples' lives," Joe Crispin said. "In something like this, you get more than you give."

Joe Crispin was not the only athlete with this mindset and the Crispins were not the only athletes to sell in the double digits.

The men's volleyball team sold for $400 to the cheerleaders and the women's lacrosse team, who will both get to throw a Hawaiian luau with the team when it returns from Hawaii.

In addition to buying the men's volleyball team, the cheerleaders sold off the chance to cheer with them at a basketball game for $140.

Not only were Penn State athletes in attendance last night to be sold off at the Athlete Auction, they were also doing a lot of the bidding. The swim team bought its strength trainers for $375, therefore buying the right to turn the tables on them.

After reminding the crowd of the pizza they would pay for in addition to the tour of the new football building, football players Justin Kurpeikis, Mike Cerimele and Bob Jones sold for $300 to Matt and Carla Jeremias of State College.

"Anything like this is worth while," Matt Jeremias said.

And he, out of most people, would know. Jeremias is waiting for a liver transplant himself and understands what raising money can mean for families who need it for medical purposes.

"We love kids and we love sports," Matt Jeremias said. "It's a good cause and we are big football fans."

Other miscellaneous jobs were offered by sports teams throughout the auction such as shoveling snow, house-cleaning services, and having the Lion appear at two lucky peoples' next parties.

Opportunities to hang out with various teams were also up for auction including the men's wrestling team, and the women's and men's soccer teams.

Before the actual auction began, a silent auction was held with signed posters and t-shirts from the men's and women's soccer teams, the women's gymnastics team, and the wrestling team, among others. The women's lacrosse team auctioned off a signed stick and a signed picture of Joe Paterno was up for grabs too.

Approximately 400 people attended the Athlete Auction, which brought in $2,650, not including the items sold during the silent auction.

Katie Schiller, Thon Communications Captain and liaison between Thon and the Student Athlete Advisory Board, was happy with the turnout.

"I think it was a lot more entertaining this year," Schiller, a sophomore on the women's lacrosse team, said. "The student athletes liked what was being offered off.

"Playing lacrosse is amazing here, but to do something so gratifying inside it makes my family proud and makes me proud of myself."
