Golden Globe Awards bring out best and worst dressed starlets

Collegian Staff Writer

The 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday night were filled with many glamorous stars making fashion history and a few others that were making fashion faux paus.

The main theme on the red carpet that night was black, black and more black. Women in bright colors were definitely in the minority. Stars such as Heather Locklear, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and Lucy Liu are just a few who decided to go with the classic color.

Locklear chose a lovely, black sparkling gown with a deep plunging neckline, another trend that made an appearance. Kidman wore a black gown with ruffles that doubled as straps. Theron wore Armani with a mighty revealing deep plunging neckline, with triangular cut outs on the sides, that turned into a backless ensemble. Liu chose to go with Versace, a see through halter top neckline and her skirt and train were adorned with black feathers.

The list could continue on until next Tuesday, but believe me there were plenty of ladies in the midnight color. One group of women that stayed away from black were the ladies of Sex and the City.

Sarah Jessica Parker opted for an Oscar de la Renta peachy-pink dress with a cascade of flowers and ruffles down the side. Kristen Davis went for Richard Tyler, and wore a one-shouldered beige gown with spiral beading. Kim Cattral looked beautiful in her strapless purple gown complete with sequins at the waist. Lastly, Cynthia Nixon chose a light blue gown by Angel Sanchez.

That group of starlets would have to get my vote for best-dressed cast.

The night also included a few surprise looks that were for the best. Stars like Laura Flynn Boyle, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez managed to stun with more conservative looks and just an all around improvement.

At last year's Golden Globe Awards, Boyle chose to wear a plain black pant suit complete with a sequined studded T-shirt -- a huge disappointment. This year she wore a light blue sparkling gown by Barish Nicholson, daughter of Jack Nicholson. Jolie chose a light pink, strapless ensemble from Versace. At last year's Oscar awards she went for the Vampire look -- this was definitely a step up.

Jennifer Lopez decided to keep her dress a secret from the press. She showed up in a knee length, one shouldered white dress by Valentino, complete with shoes by Jimmy Choo. This was a much more conservative look compared to her very revealing green palm tree Versace dress.

Now onto the men. One of the growing trends for men's fashion has to be the straight tie with dinner jacket.

A countless number of men chose to go with the straight tie, some of them were Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Dick Clark, Tom Hanks and Kelsey Grammer. Generally, I hate the look and feel that it does not have a place in the awards show attire.

However, there were only two men that I felt were able to pull of the look. Sean Hayes, Jack of Will and Grace, chose to wear a grayish-blue tie, which made the look not so boring with a certain touch of elegance. Al Pacino, recipient of the Cecil B. Demille Award, looked fabulous in his tuxedo. He chose to go with a white tie, but it had just enough texture to stand out from his shirt. Pacino's tie was also tucked into a black vest, which helped to make him look even more dapper.

A few men chose to wear the traditional tuxedo look, a few of those include Russel Crowe, Hugh Grant and Keanu Reeves.

Crowe opted to wear an all-black look by Armani, which looked good but could have been helped out with a shave and a haircut. Grant looked classic in a simple bow tie choice and so did Reeves in a similar look by Dolce & Gabbana.

Now for the moment that we have all been waiting for, the best and worst dressed of the night.

Robert Downey Jr. and Julianne Moore win the award for worst dressed. Did Downey sleep in his tux? It sure looked like it. The brocade tux was ill-fitted in the shoulders and the velvet collar just looked horrid with his faded black shirt and rumpled bow tie.

Moore could have chosen better accessories and it might have helped out the dress that looked like a white potato sack with black spaghetti straps. Her black shoulder wrap did not work well and neither did her black shoe choice -- they just looked out of place underneath the white ruffle at the bottom of the dress.

George Clooney and Debra Messing win the award for best dressed. Clooney wore a combination of designers, but managed to look fabulous in his perfectly tailored, classic bow tie tuxedo.

Messing took my breath away in her black and white dress by Ralph Lauren. She did not have a problem pulling off the horizontal strips and her train flowed effortlessly behind her. The perfect accessory to her dress, was her fire red hair pulled back into a low slick bun.
