Movie review: 'Snatch'

If film director/writer Guy Ritchie was worried that his relationship with Madonna might limit him as "Madonna's husband" in the eyes of the world, his latest film, Snatch, should ease his fears.

In a word, this movie is simply cool.

Starring Brad Pitt, Dennis Farina and Benicio Del Toro among many others, this fast-paced farce tells the story of a group of thugs and thieves in the east end of London who become entangled through jewel heists and fixed boxing matches.

The film offers something for everyone: comedy, violence and a touch of drama. Pitt's gibberish-speaking character is hysterical. The violence is of an especially gruesome —if not inventive — nature. But at the same time Ritchie never shows you the real gore, which I appreciated.

The biggest strength of Snatch is the way it weaves together various plots. Throughout the movie I found myself wondering how it was possibly all going to come together. But when it did, I was in awe of Ritchie's skill both as a director and as a writer.

My only complaint is that the movie was noticeably void of female characters. Are there no female bandits in England? You wouldn't think so after watching Snatch.

Overall, this movie was entertaining for each and every one of its 103 minutes. Ritchie asserts himself as a force in the film industry and gives Madonna a reason to fear being pegged as "Guy Ritchie's wife."
