Dido's breakthrough album No Angel moved into the Billboard Top Ten this week with its serene jazz sounds and Dido's heavenly voice.
The strange thing is the album was released more than a year and a half ago.
Only recently have Dido's videos for "Here With Me" and "Thank You" gained substantial air time on MTV and VH1.
There was no major advertising campaign, no worldwide tour just plain word of mouth that was saying, "This is good stuff."
Dido crept out of obscurity with the inclusion of "Thank You" on the soundtrack to Sliding Doors, a film starring Gwyneth Paltrow.
The WB network felt that the ethereal themes of "Here With Me" would be perfect as the opener for their new sci-fi teen show, Roswell.
That's Dido in the background music everyone is straining to hear.
Finally with the release of Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP, she got the push she needed.
Dido's vocal sampling of "Thank You" in Eminem's "Stan" left many people wondering Who is that?
No Angel answers back with soulful electronic pop songs like "Slide", "Hunter" and the title track, "I'm No Angel."
Eminem may have dropped Dido into the music mainstream, but her captivating voice and smooth-as-silk melodies have catapulted this LP into the top 10.
Some critics are accusing Dido of playing off Eminem's fame, but the UK-based chanteuse is her own claim to fame.
This classically trained songstress displays the depth of her education in echoing ballads such as "Isobel" and "My Lover's Gone." These songs combine a Celtic air seamlessly with electronic pop.
At six, Dido enrolled at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music in her native London, where she was a classical piano, violin and recorder prodigy.
No Angel's blend of jazz beats (lots of bongo), electronic media and acoustic folk produce a never-before-heard musical experience.
With their electronic beats, songs like "Here With Me" are reminiscent of Dido's earlier work with her brother and producer, Rollo.
The two collaborated as part of the trip-hop band Faithless. The group's platinum release Reverence debuted in 1996.
After her success with Faithless, Dido began to work on No Angel.
No Angel is what you turn to after a hard a day when all you want to do is unwind, relax and drink a cup of coffee. It's calming, serene music, full of elegantly crafted songs.
Dido may be "no angel," but she's flying all the way to the top.
